Haberdashers Hall
The Worshipful Company of Haberdashers has its origins in medieval times.
Throughout six and a half centuries it has moved away from its historical
involvement in the trade of haberdashery and developed into a significant
supporter of schools and education in England and Wales. The Company finally
occupied its new Hall at 18 West Smithfield, London EC1A 9HQ on Monday 15th
April 2002, the Hall being opposite King Henry's Gate of St. Bartholomew's
Hospital. The Reception Gallery leads to the Livery Hall, which has a high
vaulted ceiling, with the whole room panelled in oak. This was the area
into which the company wished to install some art work that would
complement the interior whilst at the same time drawing inspiration from St.
Catherine, the Company's patron saint. An artwork was specifically
commissioned for the gallery above the dining area which incorporated
colours from a 17th century portrait of St Catherine.
"The picture was unveiled at our Court Ladies' Lunch on 19th July and was
very well received. Thank you for introducing us to Frank, and for all the
help which you gave us and him in choosing the colours, selecting the
design, and arranging the installation."
