Inspired by the shape of an ordinary square, Michael transforms the contours, collapsing it on itself. The form loses its straight lines and rigid edges to become something quite new and more organic.
Michael Kucera's inspiration and creativity began with figurative painting in which he explored the use of chromatic colour, eventually leading to his preference of pure colour tones. Further exploration led to his artwork becoming increasingly monochromatic and he ventured into intertwining subtle hues with more dynamic surfaces.
Michael's dramatic sculptural works are originally formed from flat wooden pieces which are cast and then manipulated to create distinctive undulating pleats that intertwine line and colour. By discarding the rigid edges of an original form, something quite new and more organic is made. The transformed contours create a subtle play of light and shadow that dances across the rolling planes, evoking a sense of intrigue.
