Thoughts is a series of multiple images that act as meditations along a theme. They are intended as 'yantras', visual symbols or 'instruments' used in Eastern traditions to focus the mind.
Inspired by Greek Mythology and her own Greek roots each of Ellie Yannas's pieces tells a tale, drawing parallels between traditional and contemporary stories. She sets out to explore forms that have a strong threedimensional presence, integrating painted forms and organic materials. Ellie is interested in how images affect each other when placed side by side and usually works in series or pairs, exploring positive/negative effects of presence and absence.
Ellie often uses materials that are strong in texture and heavy in matter, such as raw pigments, or sand and earth, in order to contrast with other lighter materials such as gesso (primer), to explore different luminosities, weights and resonance of colour.
